Vopnafjordur is a true paradise for the birdwatcher. The bird fauna includes a great mixture of seabirds, waterfowl, waders, passerines and raptors.

The uninhabited Tangi peninsula north of Vopnafjordur is an ideal area to watch seabirds, and a big habitat of various duck species can be found around Nypslon estuary. Waders can be closely observed in inland wetlands, and coastal cliffs and highland moors should offer plentiful of sightings.

When driving from Vopnafjörður up to the highlands via road 85 at Möðrudalsöræfi, be on the lookout for Pink-footed Geese. They should be easy to find close to creeks and other wetlands as they are common nesters in the area. At the intersection of road 85 and road 1 take the right turn towards lake Mývatn and continue your search for Pink-footed Geese on the way.
